Issa Raes latest comedy project for HBO, named Insecure, has earned her a Golden Globe nomination.
She received the Vanguard Award at the 10thannual Essence Black Women in Hollywood.
She is a self-made YouTube star with a wildly successful TV career and a multitude of followers. Passionately rooting for black people to win awards and be more portrayed in mainstream entertainment, Issa Rae has also opened upabout the roadblocks minorities face while pursuing higher education and jobs.
Issa is famously recognized as the creator of the YouTube web series, Awkward Black Girl.The series which premiered on YouTube in 2011, would gradually go viral through social media and blog posts, attracting mainstream media coverage. The contentwas mostlycreated by black people who also held starring roles. Her series won a Shorty Award for Best Web Show in 2013.
Issas YouTube channel which was created after the debut of the web series encompasses a vast amount of content created by people of color. With more than 260 thousand subscribers on YouTube, her shows have amassed over 20 million views. Issa Rae is the creator, co-writer and star of her comedy series Insecure. Part of the series is based on Awkward Black Girl.
She graduated from Stanford University with a major in African-American studies. As a student in college, Issawrote and directed plays, in addition to making music videos.
Issas view that Hollywoods perception of African-American women posed limitations influenced her to create the web series. She did not support the assumption that people of color are not relatable.
She released a memoir in 2015, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. It became a New York Times best seller upon hitting the shelves. The memoir records her life through a series of hilarious anecdotes. It details her struggle to fit in as a black woman.
Issa has other shows that highlight African-American experiences that are often ignored in the mainstream media. Ratchet Piece Theatre and the Roomieloverfriends are such examples. She has acted, written and produced numerous television movies and series.
In other media, Issa Rae has appeared on the cover of Essence Magazine in 2015.She has constantly expressed her desire to see more black people getting involved in production behind the scenes to make an unforgettable impression in the television industry.
